并且与以及 — illustrated Chinese learning guide

When learning Chinese, many students know 和 (hé) means “and.” But in more formal Chinese, you may also see 并且 (bìngqiě) and 以及 (yǐjí).

Both can be translated as “and,” but they are not used in the same way.

The key difference is simple:

并且 connects actions, qualities, or clauses.
以及 connects nouns or noun phrases, especially in formal lists.

Let’s look at them one by one. ✨

1. 并且 (bìngqiě): and also / furthermore

并且 is used to add another action, quality, or piece of information.

It often means:

and also
furthermore
in addition

It sounds a little more formal than 和.

Basic Structure

A, 并且 B

Here, A and B are usually two descriptions, actions, or clauses.

Examples

他会说中文,并且写得很好。

Tā huì shuō Zhōngwén, bìngqiě xiě de hěn hǎo.

He can speak Chinese, and he also writes very well.

这个方法很简单,并且很有效。

Zhège fāngfǎ hěn jiǎndān, bìngqiě hěn yǒuxiào.

This method is simple and also very effective.

她学习很认真,并且每天都复习。

Tā xuéxí hěn rènzhēn, bìngqiě měitiān dōu fùxí.

She studies very seriously, and she reviews every day.

2. Don’t use 并且 to simply list nouns

A common mistake is using 并且 like 和 when listing things.

For example:

我买了苹果,并且香蕉。

Wǒ mǎi le píngguǒ, bìngqiě xiāngjiāo.

I bought apples and bananas.

This sentence sounds unnatural because 苹果 and 香蕉 are just two nouns.

Better:

我买了苹果和香蕉。

Wǒ mǎi le píngguǒ hé xiāngjiāo.

I bought apples and bananas.

So remember:

Use 并且 for adding another action or description, not for simple noun lists.
