Both 重新 (chóngxīn) and 再 (zài) can be translated as “again,” but they express different ideas.
Here is the easiest way to remember them:
👉 再 = do something one more time
👉 重新 = redo, restart, or reorganize something
Let’s look at the difference. 👇
1️⃣ 再: Do Something One More Time
When 再 (zài) means “again,” it usually refers to an action that has not happened yet at the relevant point in time.
It is commonly used for requests, plans, suggestions, and future actions.
Common Pattern
Subject + 再 + Verb
Example 1
请再说一遍。
Please say it again.
💡 The speaker wants the other person to repeat the same action.
Example 2
这个问题我想再考虑一下。
I’d like to think it over a little more.
Example 3
有时间我们再见面吧。
Let’s meet again when we have time.
In these examples, 再 focuses on doing an action another time. It does not necessarily mean starting over.

2️⃣ 重新: Redo, Restart, or Reorganize
重新 (chóngxīn) means doing something again with a new or revised process.
It often emphasizes restarting, redoing, reconsidering, or reorganizing something.
Common Pattern
Subject + 重新 + Verb
Example 1
这个字写错了,请重新写一遍。
You wrote this character incorrectly. Please write it again.
💡 The original result needs to be corrected, so the action must be redone.
Example 2
我们需要重新安排时间。
We need to rearrange the schedule.
Here, 重新安排 means making a new or revised arrangement.
Example 3
电脑出了问题,我只好重新启动电脑。
There was a problem with the computer, so I had to restart it.

3️⃣ Compare These Examples
请再写一遍。
Qǐng zài xiě yí biàn.
Please write it one more time.
This sentence mainly focuses on repeating the action.
请重新写一遍。
Qǐng chóngxīn xiě yí biàn.
Please rewrite it.
This sentence places more emphasis on redoing the original work.
The two sentences can sometimes be used in similar situations. However, 重新 more strongly suggests that the previous result needs to be changed, corrected, or replaced.
Here is another comparison:
我想再看一次这个计划。
Wǒ xiǎng zài kàn yí cì zhège jìhuà.
I want to look at this plan one more time.
我想重新考虑这个计划。
Wǒ xiǎng chóngxīn kǎolǜ zhège jìhuà.
I want to reconsider this plan.
The first sentence means looking at the plan again. The second means thinking about the plan again and possibly changing the original decision.

4️⃣ 再 Can Also Mean “Then”
再 does not always mean “again.” It can also mean “then” or “after that.”
吃完饭,我们再出去。
We’ll go out after we finish eating.
In this sentence, one action happens first, and another action happens later.
重新 cannot replace 再 here.
❌ 吃完饭,我们重新出去。
This sentence does not express the same meaning.

5️⃣ What About Past Actions?
For an action that happened again in the past, Chinese usually uses 又 (yòu) rather than 再.
他昨天又迟到了。
He was late again yesterday.
However, 重新 can be used for past, present, or future actions because it describes restarting or redoing something.
我昨天重新写了这篇文章。
I rewrote this article yesterday.

🌟 Quick Memory Tip
Use 再 when you want to express:
✅ one more time
✅ another repetition
✅ an action that will happen later
Use 重新 when you want to express:
✅ restarting an action
✅ redoing a previous result
✅ revising or reorganizing something
Remember:
👉 再 focuses on another occurrence.
👉 重新 focuses on a renewed or restarted process.
Once you understand this difference, choosing the right word becomes much easier! 😊
