SenMandarin: 怎样选择适合自己的HSK备考资料

Are you preparing for the HSK but still unsure whether you should study for HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?

The most useful starting point is to match your vocabulary list, grammar syllabus, practice papers and speaking preparation to the examination you have actually booked.

HSK Arrangements in 2026

The second global HSK 3.0 trial was scheduled for September 20, 2026, covering Levels 1–6. That trial date has passed; it is not an upcoming registration opportunity.

CTI has since announced December 13, 2026 as the official worldwide launch date for HSK 3.0. Local implementation can differ: for example, Japan’s official organizer has announced that its regular 2026 examinations will continue with the existing format. Confirm the version offered by your own test center for your chosen date.

Before preparing for an examination, confirm:

  • your HSK level;
  • your examination date and test center;
  • whether your booking uses HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0;
  • whether the test is paper-based or computer-based;
  • whether a corresponding speaking test is required and how it must be booked.

Do not assume that speaking-test arrangements from a trial apply unchanged to every later examination.

Which Version Should You Prepare For?

Use materials based on the existing six-level examination system when your test center confirms that your examination follows that version’s vocabulary and test structure.

Use the new examination syllabus and matching practice materials when your booking specifies HSK 3.0. The new framework has three stages and nine levels. The syllabus covers tasks, topics, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters.

You can also study within this framework for long-term learning. Keep that learning goal separate from the specific requirements of an examination you are about to take.

Match Materials to Your Learning Goal

Check the following details before choosing a resource:

  • HSK version and target level;
  • the main content and intended learning purpose;
  • vocabulary and grammar coverage;
  • whether the exercises match the required test format;
  • whether you also need speaking-test preparation.

This helps you avoid mixing old and new systems during exam preparation. Vocabulary and grammar you already know remain useful; focus on the gaps that matter for your target examination.

How to Choose the Right Materials

First identify:

  1. Your current Chinese level.
  2. The HSK level you are preparing for.
  3. Your examination date.
  4. Whether your test uses HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0.
  5. Whether you also need speaking-test preparation.
  6. Which area you find most difficult.

For example, a useful statement of your needs is:

I have booked HSK 4. My test center has confirmed the examination version. I need vocabulary, grammar and practice in that test format.

These details make it easier to select relevant materials instead of collecting resources that do not match your immediate goal.

Build a Balanced Preparation Plan

Effective preparation needs regular vocabulary review, grammar practice, listening, reading, writing and speaking. Practice questions help you become familiar with the test format; they are not a substitute for understanding the language.

Distinguish independently written practice exercises from actual past examination papers and officially released samples. A practice resource should not be treated as official simply because its title includes HSK.

No study resource can guarantee a particular score. Choose the correct version, identify your weak areas and prepare step by step.
