How do you say “happy” in Chinese?

You may already know these four words:

  • 高兴 (gāoxìng)
  • 开心 (kāixīn)
  • 快乐 (kuàilè)
  • 幸福 (xìngfú)

They can all be translated as “happy,” but they describe different kinds of positive feelings.

Let’s learn the differences without making them complicated. 😊

1. 高兴 (gāoxìng): Glad or Pleased

高兴 often describes a positive feeling caused by some news, an event or a particular situation.

It is often close to “glad” or “pleased” in English.

Tīngshuō nǐ tōngguò le HSK kǎoshì, wǒ hěn gāoxìng.

I’m very happy to hear that you passed the HSK exam.

Kàndào nǐ jìnbù zhème dà, lǎoshī hěn gāoxìng.

Your teacher is very pleased to see how much you have improved.

A very common expression is:

很高兴认识你。

Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.

Nice to meet you.

To say “I’m happy for you,” you can use:

我真为你高兴。

Wǒ zhēn wèi nǐ gāoxìng.

I’m really happy for you.

Remember

Use 高兴 when you feel glad or pleased, especially because something positive has happened.

2. 开心 (kāixīn): In a Good Mood or Having Fun

开心 is extremely common in everyday conversation.

It often describes:

  • being in a good mood;

  • feeling cheerful;

  • enjoying an activity or experience.

Jīntiān jiàndào lǎo péngyou, wǒ hěn kāixīn.

I was very happy to see an old friend today.

Háizimen zài gōngyuán lǐ wán de hěn kāixīn.

The children had a great time playing in the park.

Zuótiān wǒmen liáo de hěn kāixīn.

We had a great time talking yesterday.

You will often hear expressions such as:

玩得开心 — have fun

聊得开心 — enjoy talking together

过得开心 — be happy or enjoy life

Bié bù kāixīn le, wǒmen chūqu zǒuzou ba.

Don’t be upset anymore. Let’s go out for a walk.

Remember

Use 开心 for a cheerful mood or an enjoyable experience. It usually sounds relaxed and conversational.

These two words often overlap.

Wǒ jīntiān hěn gāoxìng.

I feel very pleased today.

Wǒ jīntiān hěn kāixīn.

I’m in a great mood today.

The difference is mainly one of emphasis:

  • 高兴

often focuses on feeling glad or pleased because of something.

often focuses on your mood or how much you enjoyed an experience.

For example:

Tīngdào zhège hǎo xiāoxi, wǒ hěn gāoxìng.

I was very pleased to hear the good news.

Zuótiān hé péngyou chūqu wán, wǒ hěn kāixīn.

I had a great time going out with my friends yesterday.

This is a difference in emphasis, not a strict grammatical rule. In many everyday situations, both words are possible.

Remember

  • love and relationships;
