Both 规则 (guīzé) and 规矩 (guīju) can be translated as “rules.”
But in Chinese, they are not used in exactly the same way.
Here is the easiest way to remember the difference:
📋 规则 = rules or regulations
👥 规矩 = accepted behavior or established ways of doing things
Let’s look at how they work.
01 规则 (guīzé): Rules and Regulations
规则 usually refers to rules that explain how something works, what is allowed, or what people must follow.
It is common with games, competitions, traffic, grammar, schools, and organizations.
Common expressions
比赛规则
competition rules
游戏规则
game rules
交通规则
traffic rules
语法规则
grammar rules
Examples
这个游戏的规则很简单。
The rules of this game are very simple.
开车的时候一定要遵守交通规则。
You must follow traffic rules when driving.
学汉语的时候,要慢慢了解语法规则。
When learning Chinese, you need to gradually understand the grammar rules.
💡 Think:
“What are the rules?” → 规则

02 规矩 (guīju): How People Are Expected to Behave
规矩 often refers to accepted behavior, customs, or established ways of doing things.
It is especially common in families, social situations, workplaces, and traditional practices.
Common expressions
守规矩
to behave properly / follow accepted rules
懂规矩
to know what is expected
老规矩
the usual practice / the old rule
按规矩办
to do something according to established practice
Examples
我们家有一个规矩:吃饭的时候不能玩手机。
We have a rule at home: no using phones during meals.
去别人家做客,要懂规矩。
When you’re a guest in someone’s home, you should know how to behave appropriately.
这是我们家的老规矩。
This is an old family custom of ours.
💡 Think:
“What am I expected to do?” → 规矩
Pronunciation note: In everyday Mainland Mandarin, 规矩 is commonly pronounced guīju, with a light second syllable.

03 The Core Difference
Compare these two examples:
🎲 A game
你知道这个游戏的规则吗?
Do you know the rules of this game?
Here, the focus is on how the game works.
→ 规则
🏠 Visiting someone
去别人家吃饭要懂规矩。
You should know how to behave when eating at someone else’s home.
Here, the focus is on social expectations and appropriate behavior.
→ 规矩
That is the main difference. ✅
04 A Key Difference: 很规矩
Here is one very useful difference.
规矩 can describe a person’s behavior.
这个孩子很规矩。
This child is very well-behaved.
You may also hear:
你规矩一点儿!
Behave yourself!
But you normally cannot say:
❌ 这个孩子很规则。
规则 does not mean “well-behaved.”
This is one of the easiest ways to remember the difference.

05 Sometimes Both Are Related to the Same Situation
Sometimes 规则 and 规矩 can appear in the same general situation, but the focus is different.
Compare:
学校有很多规则。
The school has many rules.
This focuses on the school’s regulations.
Now:
在学校要守规矩。
You need to behave properly at school.
This focuses more on your behavior.
So remember:
规则 → the rule itself
规矩 → how people are expected to act
This is a useful shortcut, though the boundary is not always absolute.

06 Common Learner Mistakes
语法规则 ✅
To say “grammar rules,” use:
语法规则
yǔfǎ guīzé
Not normally:

Grammar is a system, so 规则 is the natural choice.
遵守规则 vs. 守规矩
These two expressions are both common.
遵守规则
to follow rules or regulations
守规矩
to behave properly / follow accepted norms
Compare:
大家都应该遵守规则。
Everyone should follow the rules.

📋 规则 (guīzé)
Think:
rules / regulations / how something works

游戏规则
比赛规则
交通规则
语法规则
👥 规矩 (guīju)
Think:
accepted behavior / customs / established practice
Examples:
守规矩

The easiest question to ask yourself is:
Am I talking about the rule itself?
→ 规则
Am I talking about how people are expected to behave or do things?
→ 规矩
Once you understand that difference, these two words become much easier to use naturally. 🌟
