SenMandarin: 是、有与在

I have heard many beginners answer questions with sentences like:

❌ 我不有……

Please do not say this again! 😅

In Chinese, 是 (shì), 有 (yǒu), and 在 (zài) express three different ideas:

  • 是

tells us what someone or something is.

  • 有

tells us what someone has or what exists.

  • 在

tells us where someone or something is, or that an action is happening now.

Let’s learn the difference quickly.

1. 是 (shì): What Is It?

Use 是 to identify someone or something or to show which category they belong to.

Structure

Subject + 是 + noun

Examples

我是汉语老师。

Wǒ shì Hànyǔ lǎoshī.

I am a Chinese teacher.

他是我的朋友。

Tā shì wǒ de péngyou.

He is my friend.

这是我的书。

Zhè shì wǒ de shū.

This is my book.

Negative form

不是 (bú shì)

她不是学生。

Tā bú shì xuésheng.

She is not a student.

Be Careful

Do not normally put 是 directly before an adjective.

⚠️ 我是很忙。
✅ 我很忙。
Wǒ hěn máng.
I am very busy.

⚠️ 今天是很冷。
✅ 今天很冷。
Jīntiān hěn lěng.
It is very cold today.

In neutral adjective sentences, adjectives describe the subject without 是. In a contrast such as 我是很忙,但是可以帮你。, 是 can add emphasis; this is a different use.

2. 有 (yǒu): To Have / There Is

Use 有 to express possession or existence.

A. Expressing Possession

Subject + 有 + object

Wǒ yǒu yí ge mèimei.

I have a younger sister.

他有很多中文书。

Tā yǒu hěn duō Zhōngwén shū.

He has many Chinese books.

你有时间吗?

Nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma?

Do you have time?

B. Expressing Existence

Structure

Place + 有 + person or thing

教室里有很多学生。

Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu hěn duō xuésheng.

There are many students in the classroom.

桌子上有一本书。

Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn shū.

There is a book on the table.

附近有一家超市。

Fùjìn yǒu yì jiā chāoshì.

There is a supermarket nearby.

Negative form

没有 (méiyǒu)

我没有车。

Wǒ méiyǒu chē.

I do not have a car.

教室里没有人。

Jiàoshì lǐ méiyǒu rén.

There is nobody in the classroom.

Never say:

❌ 我不有时间。

Say:

✅ 我没有时间。

Wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān.

I do not have time.

In casual Chinese, 有 can sometimes be omitted after 没:

我没时间。

Wǒ méi shíjiān.

I do not have time.

3. 在 (zài): To Be at, in, or on

Use 在 to show the location of someone or something.

4. 在 (zài): An Action Is Happening Now

When 在 appears before an action verb, it shows that the action is in progress.

Structure

I am doing my homework.

她在看电视。

Tā zài kàn diànshì.

他们在吃饭呢。

Tāmen zài chīfàn ne.

The sentence-final particle 呢 (ne) is optional. It can make the ongoing meaning more noticeable.

我在写作业。
Wǒ zài xiě zuòyè.

我在写作业呢。
Wǒ zài xiě zuòyè ne.

Both sentences are correct.
