时间与时候 — illustrated Chinese learning guide

Many Chinese learners translate both 时间 (shíjiān) and 时候 (shíhou) as “time.”
But in real Chinese, they are not the same.

A simple way to remember them is:

时间 (shíjiān) = time as a thing, a resource, a period, or a schedule
时候 (shíhou) = the time when something happens

Let’s look at the difference clearly. 🌿

1. 时间 (shíjiān): Time as a “thing” or resource

时间 is usually used when we talk about time as something we have, need, spend, arrange, save, or measure.

For example, when you say “I don’t have time,” you must use 时间, not 时候.

我今天没有时间。

Wǒ jīntiān méiyǒu shíjiān.

I don’t have time today.

你有时间吗?

Nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma?

Do you have time?

学习中文需要时间。

Xuéxí Zhōngwén xūyào shíjiān.

Learning Chinese takes time.

我想节省时间。

Wǒ xiǎng jiéshěng shíjiān.

I want to save time.

Here, 时间 is like a resource. You can have it, use it, need it, or save it.

2. 时候 (shíhou): The time when something happens

时候 is often used to talk about “when” something happens. It usually appears after a time word, a phrase, or a sentence.

The common structure is:

……的时候
when / at the time when …

For example:

我学习中文的时候,喜欢听中文歌。

Wǒ xuéxí Zhōngwén de shíhou, xǐhuān tīng Zhōngwén gē.

When I study Chinese, I like listening to Chinese songs.

他小的时候住在北京。

Tā xiǎo de shíhou zhù zài Běijīng.

When he was little, he lived in Beijing.

吃饭的时候不要看手机。

Chīfàn de shíhou bú yào kàn shǒujī.

Don’t look at your phone when eating.

我到家的时候,已经很晚了。

Wǒ dào jiā de shíhou, yǐjīng hěn wǎn le.

When I got home, it was already very late.

Here, 时候 does not mean time as a resource. It means “the moment” or “the situation when something happens.”

3. The key difference

Use 时间 when you mean “time” as something you can manage.

我没有时间。

Wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān.

I don’t have time.

Do not say:

❌ 我没有时候。

Wǒ méiyǒu shíhou.

This is unnatural.

Use 时候 when you mean “when something happens.”

我上课的时候很认真。

Wǒ shàngkè de shíhou hěn rènzhēn.

When I have class, I am very serious.

Do not say:

❌ 我上课的时间很认真。
This sounds unnatural if you mean “when I have class.”

4. “什么时候” and “什么时间”: Are they the same?

Both 什么时候 and 什么时间 can mean “when,” but the feeling is a little different.

什么时候 is more common in daily conversation.

你什么时候来?

Nǐ shénme shíhou lái?

When are you coming?

我们什么时候见面?

Wǒmen shénme shíhou jiànmiàn?

When shall we meet?

什么时间 sounds more specific, formal, or schedule-related.

会议什么时间开始?

Huìyì shénme shíjiān kāishǐ?

What time does the meeting start?

飞机什么时间到?

Fēijī shénme shíjiān dào?

What time does the plane arrive?

In daily speech, 什么时候 is usually more natural.
When asking about a specific schedule, 什么时间 is also fine.

5. “有时间” vs “有时候”

These two expressions look similar, but they mean completely different things.

有时间 means “to have time.”

你有时间的话,给我打电话。

Nǐ yǒu shíjiān dehuà, gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà.

If you have time, call me.

有时候 means “sometimes.”

我有时候喝咖啡。

Wǒ yǒu shíhou hē kāfēi.

I sometimes drink coffee.

他有时候很忙。

Tā yǒu shíhou hěn máng.

He is sometimes very busy.

So remember:

有时间 = have time
有时候 = sometimes

8. Quick summary

Use 时间 when you talk about:

time as a resource
available time
a period of time
time needed to do something
a schedule or exact time

Use 时候 when you talk about:

when something happens
a moment or situation
childhood or past periods
expressions like 什么时候, 有时候, 小时候

The simplest rule is:

时间 = time itself
时候 = when / the time when something happens

Once you understand this difference, many Chinese sentences will sound much more natural. ✨
