SenMandarin: 收拾、整理与打扫

Your room is a mess. Clothes are everywhere, books are scattered around, and the floor needs cleaning. 😅

In English, you might just say, “I need to clean up!”

But in Chinese, should you say 收拾 (shōushi), 整理 (zhěnglǐ), or 打扫 (dǎsǎo)?

All three are useful, but they don’t mean exactly the same thing.

Let’s see when to use each one!

🧺 1. 收拾 (shōushi) — Tidy Up / Put Things Away

Think: Things are messy, and you want to tidy them up.

Use 收拾 when you’re putting things away, clearing up a mess, or packing your belongings.

It’s very common in everyday Chinese.

Example 1

房间太乱了,我得收拾一下。

Fángjiān tài luàn le, wǒ děi shōushi yíxià.

My room is a mess. I need to tidy up.

Example 2

明天要出发了,我还没收拾行李呢。

Míngtiān yào chūfā le, wǒ hái méi shōushi xínglǐ ne.

I’m leaving tomorrow, and I still haven’t packed.

Useful expressions:

  • 收拾房间 (shōushi fángjiān) — tidy up a room

  • 收拾桌子 (shōushi zhuōzi) — tidy up or clear a table

  • 收拾行李 (shōushi xínglǐ) — pack your luggage

💡 Remember: 收拾 often means dealing with a mess or getting your things ready. It doesn’t necessarily involve washing or scrubbing anything.

📚 2. 整理 (zhěnglǐ) — Organize / Sort Out

Think: You want to put things in order.

Use 整理 when you’re sorting or arranging things so they’re neat and easy to find.

It’s especially useful for books, clothes, notes, and documents.

Example 1

我在整理笔记。

Wǒ zài zhěnglǐ bǐjì.

I’m organizing my notes.

Example 2

她把衣服整理好了。

Tā bǎ yīfu zhěnglǐ hǎo le.

She’s finished organizing her clothes.

Useful expressions:

  • 整理衣服 (zhěnglǐ yīfu) — organize clothes

  • 整理笔记 (zhěnglǐ bǐjì) — organize notes

  • 整理文件 (zhěnglǐ wénjiàn) — organize documents

💡 Remember: 整理 focuses on making things orderly, whether you’re arranging physical objects or organizing information.

For example, when your notes are all over the place, you can 整理笔记.

But you wouldn’t say 打扫笔记. ❌

🧹 3. 打扫 (dǎsǎo) — Clean / Sweep

Think: A place is dirty, and you want to clean it.

Use 打扫 when you’re cleaning a room or another space.

This could mean sweeping the floor, mopping, wiping surfaces, or removing dust and rubbish.

Example 1

房间有点脏,我要打扫一下。

Fángjiān yǒudiǎn zāng, wǒ yào dǎsǎo yíxià.

My room is a little dirty. I’m going to clean it.

Example 2

他们正在打扫教室。

Tāmen zhèngzài dǎsǎo jiàoshì.

They’re cleaning the classroom.

Useful expressions:

  • 打扫房间 (dǎsǎo fángjiān) — clean a room

  • 打扫教室 (dǎsǎo jiàoshì) — clean a classroom

  • 打扫卫生 (dǎsǎo wèishēng) — do some cleaning

💡 Remember: 打扫 focuses on cleaning a space, rather than simply arranging your belongings.

🤔 Can You Use All Three for a Room?

Yes! But the focus changes.

Imagine you’re getting your bedroom ready for visitors.

🧺 收拾房间 (shōushi fángjiān)

You put your clothes away and clear up the mess.

📚 整理房间 (zhěnglǐ fángjiān)

You arrange your belongings and make everything more orderly.

🧹 打扫房间 (dǎsǎo fángjiān)

You clean the room, perhaps sweeping or mopping the floor.

Here’s a natural sentence using all three:

我先收拾衣服,再整理桌上的书,最后打扫房间。

Wǒ xiān shōushi yīfu, zài zhěnglǐ zhuō shàng de shū, zuìhòu dǎsǎo fángjiān.

First, I’ll put away my clothes, then organize the books on the desk, and finally clean the room.

One important thing: 收拾 and 整理 often overlap in everyday conversation. Both can mean “tidy up.”

The difference is usually what you want to emphasize, not a strict grammar rule.
