You’ve probably heard 差不多 (chàbuduō) many times in Chinese.
But what does it actually mean?
Sometimes it means almost.
Sometimes it means about.
And sometimes it means about the same.
😵 Confusing?
There’s actually one simple idea behind all of them:
差不多 = close, but not necessarily exact
Let’s look at the four uses you’ll hear most often.
1. 差不多 = “almost”
Use 差不多 when something is close to being finished, ready, or completed.
Common pattern
Subject + 差不多 + Verb Phrase (+ 了)
我差不多吃完了。
I’m almost finished eating.
作业差不多写完了。
The homework is almost finished.
我们差不多到了。
We’re almost there.
Here, 差不多 tells us that something is very close to a certain point or result.
💡 Think: not quite there yet, but close.

2. 差不多 = “about / around”
差不多 is also very common with numbers, time, money, distance, and amounts.
It tells us that the number is approximate, not exact.
我每天睡差不多七个小时。
I sleep about seven hours every day.
从这里到学校要差不多二十分钟。
It takes about 20 minutes to get from here to the school.
这本书差不多一百块钱。
This book costs about 100 yuan.
差不多一个小时就够了。
About an hour should be enough.
So when you see:
差不多 + number
think:
👉 about / around / approximately

3. 差不多 = “about the same”
When comparing two people or things, 差不多 often means:
similar / about the same / not very different
Common pattern
A 跟 B 差不多
我的汉语水平跟他差不多。
My Chinese level is about the same as his.
这两家店的价格差不多。
The prices at these two stores are about the same.
这两个颜色看起来差不多。
These two colors look very similar.
You can also use:
A 跟 B 差不多 + adjective
我跟他差不多高。
We’re about the same height.
这两本书差不多厚。
These two books are about the same thickness.
⚠️ Remember:
差不多 does not mean exactly the same.
There is still some difference — just not much.

4. 差不多了 = “almost done / nearly ready”
You’ll hear 差不多了 all the time in everyday Chinese.
The exact English meaning depends on the situation.
A: 饭做好了吗?
Is dinner ready?
B: 差不多了。
Almost.
A: 你的作业写完了吗?
Have you finished your homework?
B: 差不多了。
Almost done.
You may also hear:
时间差不多了,我们走吧。
It’s about time to go. Let’s leave.
So don’t memorize 差不多了 with only one English translation.
Ask yourself:
👉 What is “almost” ready, finished, or reached?
The context gives you the answer.

差不多 vs. 几乎 (jīhū) 🤔
Both words can sometimes be translated as “almost,” but they are not exactly the same.
Here’s an easy way to remember the difference.
差不多
Think:
about / approximately / close to
It can be a little more or a little less than the number.
差不多一百个人
About 100 people.
Maybe 95. Maybe 103.
The exact number isn’t important.
几乎
Think:
nearly / almost
It often means something gets very close to a point, but does not quite reach it.
几乎一百个人
Nearly 100 people.
This sounds like the number is close to 100, but probably still under 100.
Another example:
我几乎忘了。
I almost forgot.
So a useful shortcut is:
👉 差不多 = about / roughly / about the same / almost done
👉 几乎 = nearly / almost
They sometimes overlap, but they are not always interchangeable.

Remember This ✅
Don’t try to give 差不多 only one English translation.
Remember the basic idea:
差不多 = close, but not necessarily exact
Then look at the context:
Something is nearly finished?
→ almost
A number isn’t exact?
→ about / around
Two things are similar?
→ about the same
Someone says 差不多了?
→ almost done / nearly ready
Once you understand this idea, 差不多 becomes much easier.
And you’ll start hearing it 差不多每天. 😄
