Put things in order with 第
第 + 数词
How it works
第 turns a number into an ordinal: 第一 means “first,” rather than “one.” Add the measure word that belongs with the noun when you name an item in a sequence.
For the second item, use 第二, not 第两. 两 normally counts two items, while 二 is used in this ordinal position.
The pattern
第 + number + measure word + noun
Example sentences
这是我的第一本书。
This is my first book.
他是第二个学生。
He is the second student.
Pinyin generally shows dictionary tones; tones can change in connected speech.
What to watch for
Keep the measure word: 第一本书, rather than 第一书. 第 does not replace 本.
