Try a brief action with verb reduplication

How it works
Repeating a suitable action verb can suggest doing something briefly or trying it out. In a request, it often makes the request less abrupt.
This is a pattern for selected controllable actions, not a rule that every verb can be repeated. 看看 and 看一看 are both natural ways to ask someone to take a look.
The pattern

你看看这本书。
Take a look at this book.
我想看一看。
I would like to take a look.
Pinyin generally shows dictionary tones; tones can change in connected speech.
What to watch for
Do not treat reduplication as a tense ending. The context still tells us when the action happens.

Make 看 into a brief, softer request: 你___这本书。
