Put material inside separable verbs
离合词
How it works
Some familiar two-syllable expressions contain a verb and an object. They can separate when an aspect marker, quantity phrase, or modifier belongs between those parts.
Learn a separable expression together with its common constructions. With 见面, the person you meet is normally introduced by 跟 or 和, rather than attached as another direct object.
The pattern
Example sentences
我们见了两次面。
We met twice.
我明天跟老师见面。
I will meet the teacher tomorrow.
Pinyin generally shows dictionary tones; tones can change in connected speech.
What to watch for
For “meet the teacher,” use 跟老师见面. Do not form 见面老师 by placing a person after this verb-object expression.
Try it
Put 两次 into 我们见面了, keeping a natural order.
Show answer
我们见了两次面。 Wǒmen jiàn le liǎng cì miàn. We met twice.
