NEW HSK 3 · 2025 SYLLABUS

Separate the beneficiary from the recipient

为 / 给

wèi / gěi

How it works

为 can identify the people an arrangement is intended to benefit, or introduce a purpose. 给 can introduce the recipient of something that is provided, sent, or done.

These roles sometimes overlap, but the words cannot be swapped mechanically. Saying who an activity is intended for does not, on its own, specify who is allowed to attend.

The pattern

为 + beneficiary + action; 给 + recipient + action

Example sentences

这次培训是为新员工安排的。

This training is arranged for new employees.

公司会给他们提供学习资料。

Gōngsī huì gěi tāmen tígōng xuéxí zīliào.

The company will provide them with learning materials.

Pinyin generally shows dictionary tones; tones can change in connected speech.

What to watch for

If you mean that only a particular group may attend, state that eligibility explicitly. Do not expect 为 to express an attendance restriction by itself.
