Recognize productive quasi-prefixes

类前缀:超、多、反、无、亚、准

lèi qiánzhuì: chāo, duō, fǎn, wú, yà, zhǔn

How it works

An element such as 多 or 无 can contribute a recurring meaning to a family of words. 多 often signals multiplicity, while 无 can signal absence: 多功能 and 无现金 are useful examples.

The syllabus groups these elements as quasi-prefixes. This does not mean that you can attach each element to any word: established combinations and the context still matter.

The pattern

quasi-prefix + a compatible base

Example sentences

这是一间多功能教室。

Zhè shì yī jiān duōgōngnéng jiàoshì.

This is a multifunctional classroom.

这家商店支持无现金支付。

Zhè jiā shāngdiàn zhīchí wúxiànjīn zhīfù.

This shop accepts cashless payments.

Pinyin generally shows dictionary tones; tones can change in connected speech.

What to watch for

Do not assume the meaning of a whole word is always a mechanical sum of its parts. Check the established word and its use.

Try it

In 无现金支付, what does 无 contribute?

Show answer

It signals absence: payment without cash. The whole phrase means “cashless payment.”
