SenMandarin: 确定与决定

Have you ever wondered whether to use 确定 (quèdìng) or 决定 (juédìng)?

They can sometimes look similar in English, but in everyday Chinese, they usually focus on two different ideas:

👉 决定 → making a choice

👉 确定 → being sure, or making something fixed

A simple way to remember them:

决定 = What will I choose?

确定 = Is it certain or fixed yet?

1️⃣ 决定 (juédìng): to decide

Use 决定 when someone makes a choice about what to do.

A very useful pattern is:

决定 + verb phrase

Examples

我决定明年去中国学习。

Wǒ juédìng míngnián qù Zhōngguó xuéxí.

I’ve decided to study in China next year.

我们决定周末再去。

Wǒmen juédìng zhōumò zài qù.

We’ve decided to go this weekend instead.

你决定去哪儿了吗?

Nǐ juédìng qù nǎr le ma?

Have you decided where to go?

我还没决定要不要换工作。

Wǒ hái méi juédìng yào bu yào huàn gōngzuò.

I haven’t decided whether to change jobs yet.

💡 In these examples, there are different possibilities, and someone needs to make a choice.

2️⃣ 决定 can also be a noun

决定 can also mean “a decision.”

Two very common expressions are:

做决定

zuò juédìng

to make a decision

做出决定

zuòchū juédìng

to make / reach a decision

Examples

这是一个很难的决定。

Zhè shì yí ge hěn nán de juédìng.

This is a difficult decision.

我想再考虑一下,不想马上做决定。

Wǒ xiǎng zài kǎolǜ yíxià, bù xiǎng mǎshàng zuò juédìng.

I want to think about it a little more. I don’t want to make a decision right away.

3️⃣ 确定 (quèdìng): to be sure

In everyday conversation, 确定 is often used when you are talking about certainty.

Examples

你确定吗?

Nǐ quèdìng ma?

Are you sure?

我不确定他今天会不会来。

Wǒ bú quèdìng tā jīntiān huì bu huì lái.

I’m not sure whether he’ll come today.

你确定这是你的书吗?

Nǐ quèdìng zhè shì nǐ de shū ma?

Are you sure this is your book?

我确定我没拿错书。

Wǒ quèdìng wǒ méi ná cuò shū.

I’m sure I didn’t take the wrong book.

💡 Here, nobody is choosing between different options.

The question is:

“Am I sure about this?”

4️⃣ 确定 can also mean “set,” “determine,” or “finalize”

确定 is also commonly used when a time, date, place, number, or plan becomes fixed.

Examples

会议时间已经确定了。

Huìyì shíjiān yǐjīng quèdìng le.

The meeting time has been set.

我们还没确定见面的地点。

Wǒmen hái méi quèdìng jiànmiàn de dìdiǎn.

We haven’t finalized where to meet yet.

具体日期确定以后,我再告诉你。

Jùtǐ rìqī quèdìng yǐhòu, wǒ zài gàosu nǐ.

I’ll let you know once the exact date is set.

人数还没确定。

Rénshù hái méi quèdìng.

The number of people hasn’t been finalized yet.

So here:

确定时间 → set / finalize the time

确定日期 → set / finalize the date

确定地点 → determine / finalize the location

确定人数 → determine / finalize the number of people

💡 What about 确认 (quèrèn)?

Be careful: 确定 and 确认 are not always the same.

确定 often means that something becomes fixed or certain.

确认 often means to check and confirm information that already exists.

For example:

时间还没确定。

Shíjiān hái méi quèdìng.

The time hasn’t been set yet.

But:

请再确认一下时间。

Qǐng zài quèrèn yíxià shíjiān.

Please confirm/check the time again.

That small difference is very useful in real-life Chinese.

🔍 The Most Important Difference

Compare these two sentences:

我还没决定去不去上海。

Wǒ hái méi juédìng qù bu qù Shànghǎi.

I haven’t decided whether to go to Shanghai.

👉 I haven’t made my choice yet.

Now compare:

我还不确定他去不去上海。

Wǒ hái bú quèdìng tā qù bu qù Shànghǎi.

I’m not sure whether he is going to Shanghai.

👉 I don’t know whether it is true or certain.

So remember:

✨ 决定 → choice

✨ 确定 → certainty

🗓️ One Situation, Two Different Words

Imagine you are arranging a meeting.

First, you discuss different days:

我们决定星期五开会。

Wǒmen juédìng xīngqīwǔ kāihuì.

We decided to have the meeting on Friday.

👉 You chose Friday.

Later, all the details are finalized:

会议时间已经确定了:星期五下午三点。

Huìyì shíjiān yǐjīng quèdìng le: xīngqīwǔ xiàwǔ sān diǎn.

The meeting time has been set: Friday at 3 p.m.

👉 The information is now fixed.

So in many real-life situations, you may first 决定, and then 确定 the details.

Chinese learning illustration: 我还不确定他去不去上海。

🧠 Another Easy Way to Remember

Someone asks:

明天去哪儿?

Míngtiān qù nǎr?

Where are we going tomorrow?

You say:

还没决定。

Hái méi juédìng.

We haven’t decided yet.

👉 We still need to choose.

But someone asks:

明天几点出发?

Míngtiān jǐ diǎn chūfā?

What time are we leaving tomorrow?

You say:

还没确定。

Hái méi quèdìng.

It hasn’t been set yet.

👉 The exact time is not fixed yet.

Chinese learning illustration: 我还不确定他去不去上海。

⚠️ One More Meaning of 决定

There is one more common use of 决定.

Sometimes it means “to determine” what happens.

Example

价格由市场决定。

Jiàgé yóu shìchǎng juédìng.

The price is determined by the market.

Here, 决定 does not mean that someone is personally choosing something.

It means that one factor determines the result.

For most learners, you can learn this as a second meaning after mastering:

决定 = make a decision

🌟 Quick Review

决定 (juédìng)

make a choice → decide

我决定去。

Wǒ juédìng qù.

I’ve decided to go.

It can also be a noun:

这是我的决定。

Zhè shì wǒ de juédìng.

This is my decision.

确定 (quèdìng)

be certain → be sure

你确定吗?

Nǐ quèdìng ma?

Are you sure?

It can also mean that something becomes fixed:

时间确定了。

Shíjiān quèdìng le.

The time has been set.

⭐ Final Shortcut

你确定吗?

Nǐ quèdìng ma?

= Are you sure?

你决定了吗?

Nǐ juédìng le ma?

= Have you decided?

One asks about certainty.

The other asks about a decision.

Once you remember that difference, 确定 and 决定 become much easier to use. 😊
