Indicating a Number in Excess with “duō”

多

duō

How it works

多 indicates an unspecified amount above the stated number. With whole tens or hundreds, it normally comes before the measure word, as in the examples below.

The pattern

Whole tens / hundreds + 多 + Measure Word (+ Noun)

Example sentences

我有二十多本书。

Wǒ yǒu èrshí duō běn shū.

I have more than twenty books.

他三十多岁。

Tā sānshí duō suì.

He is over thirty years old.

学校里有一百多个学生。

Xuéxiào lǐ yǒu yìbǎi duō ge xuésheng.

There are more than one hundred students in the school.

Usage note

The amount depends on the numerical unit: 二十多 is over twenty but below thirty, and 一百多 is over one hundred but below two hundred. 多 can instead follow a measure word when it refers to an additional fraction of that unit.
