SenMandarin: 为了:表达目的

Why are you learning Chinese?

Maybe you want to pass an HSK exam, travel in China, or speak with Chinese friends.

To introduce the goal or purpose of an action, Chinese often uses 为了 (wèile).

1. What Does 为了 Mean? 🎯

为了 usually means:

  • in order to
  • so that
  • for
  • for the sake of

It tells us what someone wants to achieve or who they are doing something for.

The 为了 phrase normally comes before the main action.

Basic Patterns

为了 + goal, subject + action

or:

Subject + 为了 + goal + action

Both patterns are correct.

2. Where Should the Subject Go?

The subject can come before or after the 为了 phrase.

Purpose First

为了通过考试,我每天都复习。

Wèile tōngguò kǎoshì, wǒ měitiān dōu fùxí.

To pass the exam, I review every day.

This structure puts more emphasis on the purpose.

Subject First

我为了通过考试,每天都复习。

Wǒ wèile tōngguò kǎoshì, měitiān dōu fùxí.

I review every day in order to pass the exam.

This structure puts the subject first.

Both sentences are natural. The important point is that the 为了 phrase comes before the main action.

3. 为了 + Person or Noun ❤️

为了 does not always have to be followed by a verb.
